The Amazon Dilemma

The next 48 hours is the official Amazon Prime Day. It’s that time of the year that Amazon is promoting as a special event where large number of items are put on sale, major discounts ready with high-speed delivery, especially for its Prime subscribers. It is Amazon’s own shopping ‘holiday’.
Despite the festivities behind Amazon Prime Day, a number of its warehouse and fulfillment centers’ workers are still grappling with issues of safe work conditions and job security. Some are planning on leveraging on Prime Day to demand a better outcome for these unresolved issues. Earlier this year, reports surfaced on the struggles of its fulfillment center workers’ working conditions, strict productivity expectations, gruelling work hours especially during peak season, difficulties on obtaining time-offs, and unfavourable outcomes after allocated time-offs were utilized. Amazon denied the allegations and maintained that they have clear exceptions process for people who are unable to fulfill the expected 40 to 60 hours work weeks.
As the Amazon Prime Day commences, we shall stay tuned and anticipate further updates on these happenings.

Huawei Struggles

Despite some small ease of restrictions, Huawei’s outlook for the international market is rather uncertain. Sources reported that Huawei will undergo massive lay offs of its US workers soon. This coincides with the ban imposed on Huawei that not only restricts its sales for the US markets but also prohibits supply of its parts and software by US suppliers. Last month Google has also terminated its android mobile operating system license which means Google’s apps and services will no longer be available on Huawei’s future devices. The Executive Order that placed Huawei as a threat to the US’ national security has thus far triggered a huge blow on the brand internationally.
Updates thus far indicate that Huawei will continue to face the great wall of trade restriction unless the US government changes its stand.

Embracing Area 51

The past week, talk of aliens and conspiracy theories resurfaced after an Area 51 Facebook event went viral and triggered memes and trending topics on social media. Area 51 is a classified zone under the Edwards US Air Force Base in the Amargosa Valley of Las Vegas, Nevada. Speculations of aliens and spacehips theories have been circulating for decades, due to the classified nature of the area where its activities and projects are kept from public knowledge. No one really knows what goes on behind the restricted area (considering it is under the US military’s purview), but many are interested to find out. The ‘Storm Area 51’ event on Facebook has gathered over 1 million Facebook users signing up to attend and attempt to find out. The event is reported as not real, however, even if it is true, the US Air Force has come forward with a statement that it “always stands ready to protect America and its assets”.
With that we can only wish a hearty good luck! for all Area 51 enthusiasts.
